How to Handle a Swollen Gum Emergency

Gum swelling indicates problems with the underlying gums. Apart from gum diseases, hormonal fluctuations, malnutrition, poor denture fit, toothpaste irritations, prescription side effects, and other factors can cause gum discomfort, soreness, and inflammation.

Whatever the cause of gum infection, infected gum tissues should be treated at once. It is because gums are crucial to our overall health. If your gums are swollen, you should seek emergency dental care immediately.

Symptoms of swollen gums.

Before looking at some successful treatments, it is critical to be able to identify the symptoms. Swollen gums frequently manifest themselves as:

  • Receding gum line

Receding gums can accompany swollen gums and are distinguished by thinner gums that peel away from the teeth. While a gum transplant can effectively repair receding gums, underlying issues must also be addressed.

  • Inflammation or redness

Healthy gums are normally light pink, whereas swollen gums are redder and puffier.

  • Bleeding from gums

Brushing or flossing with inflamed gums can cause further bleeding, particularly in hard-to-reach places such as the rear of the mouth.

  • Pain or tenderness

You may feel discomfort or pain when you touch your gums or when eating and drinking.

  • Bad breath

A persistent unpleasant taste in your mouth or chronic bad breath can often accompany gum swelling, even if you have a perfect dental hygiene practice.

What causes swelling in gums?

Swollen gums can result from a variety of dental disorders, including:

  • Tooth abscess
  • Periodontitis
  • Gingivitis
  • Poorly fitting mouthguard
  • Poorly fitting dentures
  • Trench mouth
  • Tooth decay or infection
  • Orthodontic treatment
  • Bacterial infection
  • Something stuck in or under your gums
  • Root fracture

Additionally, viral infections, drug side effects, untreated diabetes, and even pregnancy have been linked to swollen gums.

Preventing swelling in gums.

Most causes of swollen gums may be avoided by maintaining adequate dental hygiene. Brush at least twice a day at a 45-degree angle, away from your gums, to eliminate debris at or below the gum line. At least once a day, use floss, interdental brushes, or water flossers to clean the space between your teeth. Consider utilizing additional useful items such as antibacterial mouthwashes and tongue scrapers.

Also, remember to schedule frequent appointments with your dentist. If your swollen gums persist for more than a few days or your health worries you, do not wait until your next checkup. See your dentist soon for treatment and a diagnosis. They will be able to assist you in restoring your dental health to a state that you can be proud of.
